Things to do in Praia: visiting Cape Verde's capital in 1, 2 or 3 days

7 min read

What are the best things to do in Praia? With one day, stroll around the Plateau, the historic centre perched above the ocean, then dive into the bustle of Sucupira market. With two days, add Cidade Velha, the UNESCO-listed birthplace of Cape Verde, 10 km away. With three, head into the interior of Santiago as far as Tarrafal beach.

As the capital of Cape Verde, Praia is often seen as nothing more than a stopover between two flights. That's a shame: the city has a genuine historic centre and a lively music scene, and it's the gateway to Santiago, the largest island in the archipelago.

Our agency is based in Praia, in the Palmarejo district. Here are our itineraries and favourite spots for making the most of the capital in 1, 2 or 3 days.

Praia, Cape Verde: the essentials in 30 seconds

  • 1 day: the Plateau on foot, Sucupira market, Quebra Canela beach and the Dona Maria Pia lighthouse.

  • 2 days: add Cidade Velha, 10 km away, the first colonial town in the tropics and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009.

  • 3 days: cross Santiago via Assomada and Serra Malagueta to Tarrafal.

  • When to go: from November to June, in the dry season.

  • On the ground: our Actour agency welcomes you in Palmarejo, Monday to Saturday.

Praia at a glance

Praia is the capital and largest city of Cape Verde, with around 141,000 inhabitants (2021 census). It stretches along the south coast of Santiago and has been the seat of government since 1770.

Nelson Mandela International Airport is very close to the city: a taxi or our private transfer service will drop you at your hotel within minutes.

Coming from Europe? Direct flights, stopovers and airports are covered in our guide How to get to Cape Verde.

Day 1: Praia on foot

Start early at Sucupira market, when it's at its liveliest. Then head up to the Plateau: Praça Alexandre Albuquerque, the Nossa Senhora da Graça church, the Presidential Palace, then the viewpoint at the Diogo Gomes monument. After lunch, go for a swim at Quebra Canela or Prainha, then watch the sunset at the Dona Maria Pia lighthouse. In the evening, enjoy live music at Quintal da Música.

Day 2: Cidade Velha, the birthplace of Cape Verde

Located 10 km west of Praia, Cidade Velha was the first town founded by Europeans in the tropics, in 1462. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009.

  • Rua Banana and its stone houses, one of the oldest colonial streets in the tropics.

  • The Nossa Senhora do Rosário church, built in 1495.

  • The pillory (pelourinho), erected around 1512-1520, a reminder of the slave trade era.

  • The Real de São Filipe fortress (1587-1593), with views over the ocean.

  • The ruins of the cathedral, sacked in 1712.

Our guided tour of Cidade Velha includes a grogue distillery and a Creole lunch with a local family. Expect to pay €50 per person in a group (from 4 people) or €55 to €140 per person for a private tour, depending on group size. Fancy the sea instead? Swap it for the boat trip to Ribeira da Barca and Águas Belas: sea caves, swimming and grilled fish on the beach, €100 per person.

Day 3: inland Santiago to Tarrafal

Head north along the mountain road. Stop at Assomada market, then take in the panoramic views in Serra Malagueta Natural Park. The day ends in Tarrafal, with its pale sandy bay and its former camp for political prisoners under the Salazar regime, now a museum.

Our Santiago island tour leaves Praia at 9am with a driver-guide (FR, EN, ES, PT). Prices: €60 per person in a group (from 4 people), €60 to €160 per person for a private tour. Meals and entrance fees not included. Staying in Tarrafal? Our catamaran trip (5 hrs, €120) leaves from there.

Prefer to explore independently? Consider car hire in Praia.

Extending your trip from Praia

Praia is the ideal gateway to the southern islands: Fogo and its volcano are linked to the capital by plane and ferry, and Maio by ferry.

We can also book your inter-island flights and transport from Praia.

Where to eat, go out and swim in Praia

Praia is also about food and music: try cachupa at lunchtime, listen to morna in the evening, and save the big beaches for Tarrafal.

Eating. The national dish is cachupa, a stew of maize and beans slow-cooked with fish or meat. Most restaurants are on the Plateau and along the Quebra Canela seafront; Palmarejo has more local places. To know what to order, read our guide to Cape Verdean food specialities.

Going out. Music is everywhere in Praia. Quintal da Música, on the Plateau, hosts live concerts in the evening. In spring, the city hosts the Kriol Jazz Festival, and Gamboa beach comes alive every May with the Gamboa festival.

Swimming. Quebra Canela is the busiest city beach, with hotels and cafés. Prainha, a small cove near the lighthouse, is more secluded. For a real postcard beach, head to Tarrafal, about 1 hr 30 min by road to the north. As everywhere in Cape Verde, check the currents before swimming.

Practical tips for visiting Praia

When to go? The dry season, from November to June, is ideal. In February, Praia averages 27 °C in the afternoon, 20 °C at night and virtually no rain. The rare showers fall mainly from August to October. Details in When to visit Cape Verde.

Getting around. The Plateau is easy to explore on foot. Taxis are plentiful and cheap in town. For Cidade Velha or the interior of the island, take an aluguer (shared minibus), a hire car or an excursion with a driver. It's all explained in our transport guide.

Where to stay? The Plateau and Prainha are convenient for a short stay on foot; Palmarejo has a more local feel. To experience Santiago from the inside, discover our homestay accommodation.

Budget. Our day excursions start at €50 per person in a group. To estimate the cost of your whole trip, see our guide How much does a trip to Cape Verde cost?

Safety. Praia is a capital city, so take the usual precautions. Keep an eye on your belongings in markets, avoid walking alone at night in deserted streets and take a taxi back in the evening.

Entry requirements. Passport, visa exemption and online registration: check our Entry requirements page before you travel.
